Therapeutic Interventions with Children, Youth, and Adults living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Focus of Training

This two-day certificate (14 hours) workshop will focus on considerations for Therapists in providing services to individuals living with Fetal Alchohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). There has been much misunderstanding regarding individuals living with FASD and therapy. Some information in years past inferred that traditional cognitive therapy or any therapy in general, was not appropriate for those diagnosed within the spectrum. This misguided and generalized notion is clearly in dispute today. Clearly, this patient population comes with a number of physical and social history issues, as well as co-occurring disorders resulting in very complex profile. This session assists Therapists in evaluating and designing patient-specific, effective intervention strategies and intervention techniques. The OBD Triage Model is a strength-based tool intended to focus on the individual’s strengths and abilities, while acknowledging their challenges in treatment. The course is pertinent to professionals involved in therapeutic treatment and counselling services.

Topics

  • Identification of physical issues that may interfere with interventions
  • Determining cognitive and executive functioning abilities in patient-specific treatment
  • Evaluating Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID) possibilities, and how these issues alone or in combination, may result in difficulties in sessions often requiring modifications
  • The OBD Triage evaluation tool allows the Therapist to determine what modifications may be necessary to effectively communicate with their patients/clients
  • Factoring the medical disposition, social history, cultural factors, and learning abilities in designing patient-specific treatment planning
  • Variables in treatment modalities and considerations for change
  • Ensuring treatment information is understandable to the individual living with a diagnosis within FASD
  • Creating patient-specific, strength-based strategy development and prevention techniques - The OBD 3 Steps Plan of Action
  • Accessing and maintaining patient-specific community based aftercare and service delivery
