Upon completion of the medical evaluation and verification of diagnosis within Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder,
diagnostic interpretation of the respective brain dysfunction (injury) is then obtainable. By providing a defined,
detailed explanation of the individual’s specific disabilities as a direct result of teratogenic exposure(s), we are
then able to identify the cognitive deficits that translate to behaviours.
Prevention strategies and intervention
techniques are suitably designed utilizing the OBD 3 Step Plan of Action! in order to focus on strengths and
create success in all areas of the life course. The goals are to assist individuals, families, Courts, Social Service
and Community agencies in developing appropriate planning within the home or residential environment,
academic/vocational settings and recreational activities.
Sessions consist of a two-hour Power Point
presentation and invitations are extended to all persons living and/or working with the individual. This may
include: Parents, extended family, respite caregivers, teachers, principals, classroom assistants, therapists,
social workers, group home or agency staff, youth workers, probation officers, lawyers.
The structure of the DIAS is as follows:
- To review the particular physiological issues (identification of the patient’s dysmorphic physical findings and
central nervous system dysfunction issues) that may translate to behaviours.
- To provide an accurate explanation of the overall cognitive functioning, to identify strengths, acknowledge the
deficits and the correlation between processing abilities and behavioural issues.
- By utilizing the OBD 3 Step Plan of Action! demonstrate which processing deficits are likely responsible for the
manifestation of the current behaviours of collective concern and design explicit prevention methods and
intervention strategies to reduce the incidence if the inappropriate behaviour(s).
- As a team, encourage discussion and develop suggestions and/or recommendations for each participant with
the unified goal to modify (if required) the home, school, therapeutic and/or recreational environments in order
to provide the child/youth/adult with the best possible chance of success throughout the life course. By including
all persons involved, our aspiration is to develop and support relationships and provide consistency in all areas
of service delivery.
Patient Diagnostic Interpretation of Abilities Sessions (PDIAS) ©
Provides the individual with an explanation

and are focused on the identification of their strengths and abilities. Issues that may be addressed are physical
issues, academics, employment options, birth control, anger management, recreation, relationships, substance
