Teachers Training Teachers:
Strategies for Students living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder's

Focus of Training
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term describing a form of organic brain injury/dysfunction and whole body disorder. This medical diagnosis is complicated as no two individuals present with the same physical, cognitive, sensory, executive functioning, or behavioural issues. Children living with, or suspected to have FASD, often present with hidden disabilities that may result in frustration for the student, teacher, parents, and administrators.
Considering financial constraints of our current economy, the intention of this seminar is a cost-effective, “Train the Trainer” Certification course for Administrators, Education Specialists, School Psychologists, and Resource Teachers. Participants will develop curriculums to assist other educators in how to accurately design patient-specific prevention strategies and intervention techniques for children/youth with FASD. The focus is on identification of potential physical, sensory, executive functioning, and learning style issues. These issues alone or in combination, may translate to what appears to be intentionally uncooperative or inappropriate behaviours. The OBD 3 Steps Plan of Action © is a user-friendly, quick method to create strategies designed to reduce the incidence of undesirable behaviour using a strength-based, creative approach.
Topics
- How Can I Use Patient-Specific Tactics in a Large Classroom Setting? Mindful of overcrowded classrooms, strategies are developed for the student living with FASD that are beneficial to the other students as well
- Integrating Natural Remedies into the Classroom Environment
- Not Just for Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Even slight physical differences and central nervous system variables have the potential to result in not only misunderstandings of non-compliance, but physical danger to the student as well. Educators teaching physical education, home economics, and industrial arts classes need to be aware of these possibilities and reduce the risk of unintentionally placing a student in a compromising situation
- Where Have All the Manners Gone? Modelling courteous behaviour is paramount to a child’s success in life. Discussion will focus on having students themselves teach and model manners and appropriate boundaries
- Examination of Actual Case Examples. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of actual cases (keeping within the strict guidelines of confidentiality) in order to “plug into” the OBD Triage 3 Steps Plan Model©. Classroom specific behaviours to be reviewed are: not attending, distractibility, abruptly leaving the classroom, failing to complete tasks or homework, and verbal and physical aggression, substance use
- Integration versus Segregation. Discussion on the evaluation of success rates in modified classroom settings
